State/Federal Licenses:

The German Dipl.-Psych degree (Diplom-Psychologe) is based on a full-time six year specialists' course of study (it is not a liberal arts degree) including internships and training according to the legal requirements which regulate the accreditation of psychologists in that country. Since all German universities are state owned, the degree requirements are indentical for all universities, unlike in the U.S.,where academic and licencing standards can vary. Consequently, there is currently no statewide system for registering psychologists by liscincing numbers. Usually German psychologists become members of their local health insurance chapter, which represents their legitimation in their community. However, this system does not extend to those psychologists who practice abroad.
