BADCOE, Andrew
I am a counselor, psychotherapist and social worker originally from Melbourne, Australia. I am located on the western side of Tokyo. I provide counselling and psychotherapy to adult and adolescent clients dealing with a variety of life challenges. I have a long-standing interest in supporting people experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, relationship challenges, addiction (eg. alcohol) and physical illness or disability.
I strive to create a supportive, accepting and non-judgemental space for all clients, and my therapeutic practice is sensitive to dynamics of shame and trauma. It is shaped primarily by Relational Gestalt Therapy, psychodynamic and systems approaches, but also draws on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). My orientation is strengths-based and exploratory, focusing on meaning-making in the here-and-now and working towards pragmatic self-compassion. Where needed, I adopt a semi-structured and skills-based approach, especially when working with younger and/or neurodivergent clients.
As a clinical (hospital) social worker I have worked extensively with individuals and families living with chronic or life-limiting illness, especially in psychosocial cancer care, palliative care, gastroenterology, neurology and Addiction Medicine.
I am registered as a Clinical Psychotherapist and Clinical Counsellor with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA) and am a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW).
