SHOJI, Mutsumi
I am a psychotherapist and art therapist. Do you see your life as a journey shaped by culture, transition, and identity? I provide bilingual psychotherapy and art therapy for individuals navigating cultural transition, identity development, loneliness, and the integration of multiple cultures.
If you are like me—coming from one culture and living in another—you know what it feels like to travel between worlds. Some journeys are invisible, though, unfolding quietly within us. You may feel like a stranger in your own culture—never fully inside, never fully outside. That in-between space can feel isolating, yet it also holds the potential for profound insight. I work with people who wish to understand this in-betweenness more deeply and transform it into a source of meaning, clarity, and personal growth.
My clinical perspective has been shaped by over twenty years of professional work across cultural, institutional, and social boundaries. I have worked with a wide range of individuals—from incarcerated youth, to indigenous populations to students at a prestigious college, as well as adults from many countries and social strata. Across these diverse groups, my focus has remained consistent: helping people make sense of their inner experiences and live in ways that feel authentic and integrated, both inwardly and outwardly.
While practical concerns are addressed in my sessions, the central work involves developing self-awareness and psychological insight. I draw from depth psychology, informed by five years of post-graduate Jungian training, to explore unconscious patterns, symbolic meaning, and internal conflicts with care and clinical rigor.
Psychotherapy, as I practice it, does not rush to resolve important, inner tensions prematurely. When clients feel caught between opposing forces—whether cultures, roles, values, or other inner polarities—we stay with that tension. From this in-between space, something new can emerge: a third perspective that is not a compromise, but a psychologically meaningful answer beyond an either/or perspective. This process supports integration, flexibility, and a more whole way of being in the world.
