TIGHE, Richard
I am a UK-chartered psychologist from Ireland. I have been working with the international community here in Japan since 2011 and have extensive experience in special education and mental health. My therapeutic approach integrates aspects of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), choice therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.
My philosophy when approaching therapy has taken me many years to comprehend fully. Through my study and training, I feel it can be best expressed through the Latin "Temet Nosce," which roughly translates as "know thyself." This phrase is essential in my therapy approach because it is at the heart of all work done with a client. Helping the clients truly understand and know themselves allows them to face the challenges that are a part of them and come to terms with those challenges. As a result, they can build the skills needed to overcome their mental health concerns.
I have also come to understand that no single therapeutic approach will work with every client; each person's unique life experience influences the approach that should be taken with them. As such, I approach each client through various modalities to ensure that we can find the best one that fits their particular needs and help them know themselves.
